Background of the study
Flooding remains a recurrent natural disaster with severe socio-economic repercussions, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas like Aba South. Rapid urbanization, inadequate drainage systems, and deforestation have intensified the frequency and magnitude of flood events (Okoro, 2023). Recent studies indicate that flooding not only causes immediate physical damage but also disrupts economic activities and displaces communities (Chukwu, 2024). The socio-economic implications of flooding include loss of livelihoods, diminished property values, and increased vulnerability among marginalized groups. With climate change exacerbating extreme weather events, understanding community experiences and coping mechanisms is critical (Eze, 2025). This study contextualizes flooding within the socio-economic fabric of Aba South, assessing both historical trends and emerging challenges. It will explore the interplay between environmental degradation and socio-economic resilience while examining local government interventions and community preparedness. Such an integrated perspective is necessary for developing sustainable flood management strategies and reducing long-term vulnerabilities (Okoro, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Aba South Local Government Area has experienced recurrent flooding that significantly disrupts socio-economic activities and community well-being. Despite numerous interventions, gaps remain in understanding the full scope of socio-economic impacts and the effectiveness of current flood management strategies. The problem is compounded by inadequate urban planning, limited community engagement, and resource constraints, which impede effective flood response. This study seeks to unravel the underlying causes of socio-economic disruption and evaluate existing measures, emphasizing the urgent need for improved strategies to mitigate future flood risks (Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the socio-economic impacts of flooding in Aba South.
To evaluate the effectiveness of current flood management interventions.
To identify community coping strategies in response to flood events.
Research questions:
What are the socio-economic impacts of flooding in Aba South?
How effective are current government and community flood management strategies?
What coping mechanisms are employed by affected residents?
Research Hypotheses:
Flooding significantly disrupts local economic activities.
Inadequate flood management policies exacerbate socio-economic vulnerabilities.
Community-based interventions improve coping and recovery post-flooding.
Significance of the study
The study will illuminate the socio-economic ramifications of flooding, offering a foundation for improved flood management strategies. The findings will benefit policymakers, urban planners, and disaster management practitioners by providing evidence-based recommendations for enhancing community resilience and adaptive capacity in Aba South (Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the socio-economic implications of flooding within Aba South Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Flooding: The overflow of water that submerges land.
Socio-economic Implications: The social and economic consequences resulting from environmental events.
Coping Strategies: Methods used by communities to manage and mitigate disaster impacts.
